Spring Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited is committed to the “Preservation and Restoration” of Spring Creek

On April 5 the front page of the CDT featured a story under the heading “Spring Creek Environmental Worries”. The article went on to explain how the muddy discharge from a construction site into Spring Creek caused concerns and Trout Unlimited was contacted. This is an example of the Chapter’s “Watershed Watch” program in action. Spring Creek is a very high quality native brown trout fishery. It is one of the best trout streams in the East. Studies have shown that visiting fisherman spend millions of dollars locally each year. The threat to the stream’s occupants is silt that enters the stream as muddy inflow. The chapter hopes that the “Watershed Watch” program will help preserve the high quality status of Spring Creek though preventative actions and emphasizing the employment of ‘best practices’ at construction sites.

Recently the chapter named its Habitat Improvement Fund in memory of Tony Gerace, past chapter president and long time environmental activist. The current exceptional quality of Spring Creek is in large measure due to Tony’s past dedication and hard work. The chapter in partnership with PA Fish and Boat has a goal to install stream habitat and riparian improvements in 12 sections of Spring Creek. It is fitting that these improvement efforts will be a memorial to Tony.

The first project on PSU Sheep Farm is expected to be completed in 2007. Construction work is scheduled for 8-20-07. The chapter has been awarded a TU Embrace-A-Stream Grant and the chapter is also contributing funds for the sheep farm project.

Grant applications are being completed so that funding can be acquired to complete at least 5 additional habitat improvement sites over the next 3 years. These projects will be undertaken in partnership with PA Fish & Boat Commission. Letters of support for these projects have been received from a wide range of local business, environmental, government and sportsman groups.

Volunteers for the “Watershed Watch” and the Habitat Improvement Initiative are welcomed and needed.

By Joe Boston.

SCTU BOARD MEETINGS

Board meetings are held at the Comfort Suites Hotel, 132 Village Drive, State College at 7:30 p.m. on the second Monday following the scheduled Membership Meeting. The Board members welcome and would appreciate greater participation from Chapter members. As many of you know, our membership and board meetings are held at the Comfort Suites Hotel. Comfort Suites provides the rooms to us at no charge. We want to thank Karen Mansfield and her staff for their support.

VISIT THE SCTU WEB SITE: springcreektu.org

The Web Site lists membership and board meeting dates; contains the past 5 months of Tertiary Treatment; and provides links to Spring Creek USGS stream flow conditions, weather, and a number of other good information sources.

SCTU LIST-SERVE

Please consider joining the SCTU List-Serve. The Chapter maintains a List-Serve, an e-mail contact list that includes approximately 65 of the 350 SCTU members. The List-Serve is used to provide e-mail notices of upcoming events and activities. You will not be flooded with a lot of unwanted e-mails. The List-Serve will only be used for important communication from the chapter. If you would like to be included in the List-Serve please send your e-mail address to Bill Brusse at wbrusse@converseconsultants.com </ym/Compose?To=wbrusse@converseconsultants.com> or to Vince Norris at vpn1@psu.edu

HELP ALWAYS NEEDED

SCTU needs volunteers. Many of the issues that affect the Watershed will be decided based on the “science” of the issue. We need knowledgeable individuals to help out with land use, water quality, and legal issues. We also need volunteers to attend Township and Borough meetings to help track development plans and proposed ordinances that could impact the Creek so that SCTU has the opportunity to comment on those issues before they are approved. We also need volunteers to organize creek improvement and cleanup activities.
