Thursday, November 6th, 2014 - Shannon White  - "Trout are smarter than we think"

We’ve all heard the myth that fish have a five-second memory.  But, if fish are so dumb, why is my tackle box full of lures of all shapes, sizes, and colors?  This talk will highlight some of the cognitive processes underlying trout behavior with specific emphasis on feeding. Fish behavior has traditionally been ignored in fisheries research, but I will argue that it is vital to the proper management and conservation of fish populations.

Shannon is a first-year Ph.D. student at Penn State studying trout thermal habitat use and behavior.  Originally from Virginia, she has a Master of Science in Fisheries and Wildlife from Virginia Tech and a Bachelor’s of Science from Randolph-Macon College. Her research interests have taken her across the country to explore topics in non-game fish conservation, stream habitat restoration, and social learning in trout.
